Editor’s note: Doctors Health Journal recently published
a series of feature articles on the causes, dimensions and
possible cures for the nursing shortage in Manatee and Sarasota
counties. The three articles follow below.
Need a nurse? They are not easy to find because we are in
the midst of a critical national nursing shortage. The
Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations (JCAHO),
the organization that accredits hospitals and other health
providers, has issued a major study documenting the shortage
of nurses in the United States. The in-depth study also
prescribes a series of steps that JCAHO recommends to the health care
sector of the nation to cure the problem.
